The Lions were busy shoring up their defensive line by trading for Cleveland’s defensive tackle Corey Williams and signing defensive tackle free agent Kyle Vanden Bosch to a 4 year deal. Most mock drafts had the Lions picking either Nadamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy with the second overall pick, but with the moves the Lions made, they will be able to shift focus and pick safety Eric Berry out of Tennessee. Unless the Lions trade the second overall pick in the draft, it’s almost a sure thing that McCoy or Suh will fall to the Bucs with the third overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
The champagne bottles are popping at 1 Buc Place. The Bucs won’t be players in this year’s free agency, but they are so far turning out to be one of the biggest beneficiaries, if the Lions keep their pick. There’s nothing glamorous about picking a defensive tackle with the second overall pick, but there’s nothing more frustrating than watching your team get steam rolled on the ground week in and week out. Not to mention the non-existent pass rush the Bucs applied last season.
The biggest loser has to be the St. Louis Rams. The Rams have lost any leverage they may have had with trading with the Bucs. They are now forced to take a player they probably don’t think is a true #1 in either defensive tackle or one of the good QB’s available. The Rams may be able to trade the pick, but they won’t be able to command a high price that other drafts could.
The first pick for the Bucs, barring any changes or trades, seems real simple. Now it’s up Mark Dominik to do his job and make sure the rest of picks are good players that can help turn this franchise around.
